A: Wild birds use their feet and beaks to prune their feathers. They must keep their feathers in top condition for unhindered flying. They keep them straight and clear of dirt, mites, tiks, lice and any other foreign object that may end up lodged in their plumage. The top of the head can only be reached with their feet which are not as easy to be meticulous with in cleaning. So often feathers are pulled out inadvertently, especially if they are badly infested with bugs and it is late summer. At this time of year most song birds lose and replace all of their feathers (not at the same time). So a combination of these events may lead to baldness.
